A change to the Doctoral Overseas Conference (DOC) Grant, coming into force on 9 November 2022, means that for the first time visa costs will be covered by the fund.
If you’re presenting your doctoral research at a conference overseas and require a visa to travel to the host country, you can now apply for up to £100 towards those costs.
This is in addition to the £1,100 limit of DOC funding that is available across the term of a PhD.
It is hoped that the additional funding will go some way to supporting international researchers to the UK, who have faced increasing difficulties in travelling to international conferences over the past few years. The money will also be available to UK students requiring a visa.
If you are an international student hoping to travel overseas for a conference there can be significant delays to booking a visa appointment at some embassies. We encourage you to apply as early as possible for an appointment, though we understand that is not always possible.
The DOC Fund is administered by the Doctoral School and is made possible thanks to a generous grant from the Sussex Fund. See the Doctoral Overseas Conference Grant webpage for the scheme’s criteria, application guidance, terms and conditions, and to apply.
