Can’t make it to a workshop? Our Researcher Development Online site has you covered

For many doctoral researchers, attending classroom-based workshops on a regular basis is unrealistic – whether that’s because of location, caring responsibilities, or because they’re studying (and working) part-time. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought this issue to the fore.

In the Doctoral School we are committed to providing more online resources that you can engage with at a time and place that suits your own circumstances.

The Researcher Development Online Canvas site is the place for PhD development and training resources at Sussex. From recordings of past events and inductions to self-led modules and RDP webinars, this is where we share our content.

Below are some highlights we’ve added to the site recently, but there is lots more to explore. While we can’t record all of our workshops – for example, those that are largely practice-based or where participants are sharing personal experiences – we will add more as the year progresses, so keep checking back!

ElecTV Online Course Collection

Dr Joanna Young delivers regular RDP workshops on data visualisation, poster presentations and social media. We’ve signed up to four exciting new online courses from her company, ElecTV, for Autumn 2021.

Introduction to R – Access Code SUSSEX2021

As these are new we’d be grateful for any feedback – if they prove popular we will continue with them into 2022. Places on these modules are limited; if you’re unable to enrol, contact researcher-development@sussex.ac.uk to join the waiting list.

Introduction to R, Intermediate R and Introduction to SPSS

Dr Rod Bond (Psychology) teaches RDP workshops on the statistical analysis software packages R and SPSS. These recordings and other resources accompany the live taught sessions that run every term (see RDP page to book).

Workshops from Dr Catherine Pope

Dr Catherine Pope draws on her experience as a PhD candidate and doctoral trainer to deliver RDP workshops on supervision, writing, planning and time management.

The following workshops are now available as recordings, accompanied on the Canvas site by exercise worksheets:

  • Working with your supervisor
  • Preparing for your final year
  • Adapting your PhD
  • The Productive Researcher: how to keep writing

PhD challenges and mental health

As part of our PhD Mental Health lunchtime series of workshops, Dr Sophie Valeix gives some background on the unique challenges doctoral researchers face and reviews some of the latest research in this area.

As well as being an excellent standalone session for anyone interested in PhD wellbeing, this is required viewing if you attend one of Sophie’s mental health workshops.

The next lunchtime series will run again in February 2022, see here for more details of each session.
